FNB Codefest 2016: What’s happening?

The coolest IT sprint in the FirstRand Group is going to new heights this year; join us to build, learn and share your cool stuff.

At last year’s October codefest over 250 developers built 42 apps in a 6 day sprint from business ideation through to an intense dragon’s den including the FNB and RMB CEOs (see the highlights video). This year’s non-stop programming marathon is doubling to 48 hours with a bigger emphasis on rewarding technical craftsmanship. During 3-7th October teams can look forward to world class industry expertise, strategic partner solutions, intense collaboration and all the secret sauce that made last year’s events; “world leading … streets ahead”. Fintech masterclasses will also run during the 3 months leading up to codefest, imparting the wizardry for FirstRand’s “moonshot factory”. This exciting “learn your stuff” addition to codefest will equip our ninjas with practical skills to convert Singularity University thinking to game-changing technology. To get from hype cycle to working prototype it is smarts and experience that make the difference; what’s cool is also what actually works and masterclasses make for master craftsmen and women. [2/5]

“Xfest” is the second major improvement on last year’s event; an exhibition of our next generation thinking in the same room, hosted by the FNB Innovators team. Awesome technology will be showcased internally as incubators and startups across the group heed the call to “share your cool stuff”. On the last day, Xfest will exclusively showcase the newly built codefest apps from the 48 hour dev marathon as teams impress the dragons and compete for votes to win big. [3/5]

Another part of the build up to codefest; this year’s DevOps Africa Day conference will be hosted by FirstRand on 28th September. During the week before codefest, industry experts will converge and engage the IT industry on the latest thinking in DevOps, a close cousin of Agile and a key driver of many codefest solutions. Last year’s event was hosted by Barclays and we are proud to make our contribution to the DevOps community this year. [4/5]

Every day thousands of IT professionals across FirstRand are learning, sharing and building cool stuff; this is what helped FNB become the best in South Africa for digital bankingCodefest and everything else happening during July to October 2016 are additional collaboration opportunities to make even more magic. You can harness the multiplier effect of these initiatives and help drive fintech disruption in FirstRand, after all cool stuff still requires cool people; codefest@fnb.co.za.
